5624218 Corporal George Champ, 1st Bn, Royal West Kent Regt
5624218 Cpl George Champ of the 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment was killed on the 10th November 1944. He was 26 years old, the husband of Mabel Gertrude Champ. He is buried in Forli War Cemetery in Italy.
The photo above dates to 1941 or 1942 and shows George standing on the left next to his best pal, George Stapleton. At the time the photo was taken, both men were serving with the Devonshire Regiment on Gibraltar. They parted company after that with George Stapleton going to Burma with the Welch Regiment, while George Champ went to the West Kents. Before the war, George Champ was, according to George Stapleton's son Nigel, a footballer, although which team he played for is not now known.
My thanks to Nigel Stapleton for providing additional information and the photograph on this page.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
