He was 33 years old, a Londoner, and was the husband of Harriet Harrowell of Leyton, Essex (now East London). He is buried in the Catania War Cemetery on the island of Sicily.

D-day 1944. Eighteen year old 14666034 Private Jack Donoghue of the 6th Battalion, Green Howards died on the 6th June 1944 in Northern France. He was eighteen years old, the son of John and Edith Donohue of Todmorden, Yorkshire. He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery.

4751983 Lance-Corporal John Purdue of the 7th Battalion, Green Howards (Yorkshire regiment), died in North Africa on the 16th March 1943. He was 27 years old, the son of Harold Edwin and Mabel Alice Rose Purdue of Histon, Cambridgeshire. John was born in East London and living in Essex when he enlisted. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial in Tunisia.
