6405010 Private John Eager of the 8th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, died on the 12th August 1940. He was 38 years old, the son of William and Eiscalla Eager and the husband of Anne Eager of Sallynoggin in southern Ireland. He was born in Eire and enlisted there.

Private Eager is buried in Dean's Grange Cemetery in the Republic of Ireland.

6398297 Pte Albert Leonard Frank Verrall of the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, died in South Africa on the 6th July 1942. He was 27 years old, the son of William Leonard and Mary Jane Verrall of Bexhill-on-Sea, in Sussex. He is buried in Durban (Stellawood) Cemetery.

6395870 Sgt Harry Rackham, 2nd Bn, Royal Sussex Regt

The Commonwealth war Graves Commission gives Harry Rackham's date of death as between 26th May 1940 and 4th June 1940. He was 6395870 Sergeant Harry Rackham of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment and he was killed - or died of wounds - during the desperate days in May and April 1940 when the British Army was pinned to the coastline in northern France. Had Harry managed to survive, he may well have been one of the many thousands of men rescued from the Dunkirk beaches by an unlikely flotilla of military, merchant and private vessels. As it was, he died seventy years ago today (according to the UK Roll of Honour) and is buried in Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery in Morbecque.

Harry was born in Suffolk and was living at Great Yarmouth when he enlisted. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records that he was 36 years old, the son of Edith Kindred of Hopton, Suffolk.

6408458 L/Cpl Herbert Pile of the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, died on the 14th February 1944. He was 26 years old, the son of Sidney and Gertrude Pile of Beddingham in Sussex. He is buried in the Cassino War Cemetery in Italy.

25 year old 6402919 Lance-Corporal Stanley Britt of the 4th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment died on the 28th October 1942 in North Africa. He was the son of Eli and Annie Britt of Cross-in-Hand in Sussex and he died inthe fighting around El Alamein in Egypt. He is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery.
