4694120 Private Harry Moore of the 1/4th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, died in Iceland on the 21st January 1942. Harry was a Yorkshireman, born in Leeds, and was 26 years old when he died.

He was one of a platoon of men men who died when they were hiking in the mountains around Reydarfjordur and got lost in a sudden winter storm. Forty-eight men survived, but Harry was one of eight men who did not. The other men who died are:

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission tells us that he was 22 years old; the son of Thomas and Agnes Gilligan, of Manchester, and the young husband of Kathleen Gilligan, of Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Manchester. He was serving with 87 Battery, the 24th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, ast the time of his death.

Harold Gilligan is buried in Guahati War Cemetery in India, one of 498 identified casualties there.

393 British Army personnel died on the 7th January 1943, the vast majority of these (302) at sea. I'm guessing, although I don't know for sure, that the majority of these 302 men therefore, were en route to a war zone and were on a ship or ships which were sunk as a result of enemy action. This is supposition on my part but I'd like to know for sure.

1587677 Gunner Reuben Baum of 252 Battery, 80th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, was lost at sea on this date. He was 28 years old and has no known grave. A west Londoner, Reuben is commemorated on the Medjez-El-Bab Memorial in Tunisia.
